Why Visit Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is one of the most spectacular cities on earth. Dramatic granite peaks rise from tropical forest, crescent-shaped beaches are framed by favelas and skyscrapers, and the whole city pulses with samba, bossa nova and Carnival energy. Few places combine natural beauty and cultural vibrancy like Rio.

Practical Tips

  • Visa: UK, EU, US, Canadian and Australian citizens can enter Brazil visa-free for up to 90 days (extendable to 180).
  • Currency: Brazilian Real (R$). £1 ≈ R$6.50. Credit cards widely accepted. ATMs (caixas eletrônicos) in banks and shopping centres; avoid standalone street ATMs.
  • Tipping: 10% service charge is usually included on restaurant bills. If not, 10% is standard.
  • Safety: Rio requires street smarts. Use Uber/99 at night, avoid walking alone after dark in quiet areas, leave flashy items at the hotel. The tourist areas (Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Santa Teresa by day) are well patrolled.
  • Language: Portuguese, not Spanish. Learning "obrigado/obrigada" (thank you), "por favor" (please) and "com licença" (excuse me) goes a long way.
  • Sunscreen: The tropical sun is fierce. Factor 50+, reapply often, especially at the beach.
