Why Southeast Asia Is Perfect for Budget Travel

Southeast Asia is every backpacker's dream destination. On £12–25 per day you can eat incredibly well, sleep in decent accommodation and move between countries. The combination of low prices, spectacular landscapes, fascinating culture and friendly people makes it the world's best region for budget travellers.

What It Actually Costs

Daily Budget by Country

| Country | Backpacker | Mid-range | Comfortable | |---------|-----------|-----------|-------------| | Thailand | £16–25 | £33–50 | £65+ | | Vietnam | £12–20 | £25–40 | £50+ | | Cambodia | £12–20 | £25–40 | £50+ | | Indonesia (Bali) | £16–28 | £33–55 | £75+ | | Laos | £12–20 | £25–37 | £45+ | | Philippines | £12–20 | £25–40 | £55+ |

Info

Vietnam is arguably the cheapest country in Southeast Asia. A pho (noodle soup) costs 30,000 VND (£0.95) and a local beer just 10,000 VND (£0.30).

Budget Accommodation

  • Hostels: Dorm beds from £2.50–6.50/night. Booking.com and Hostelworld are the best platforms.
  • Guesthouses: Private rooms from £6.50–12/night. Perfect for couples.
  • Homestays: Stay with local families from £4–8 including breakfast.

Tips for Saving on Accommodation

  1. Negotiate prices in person (10–20% discount off online prices)
  2. Stay 3+ nights and ask for a long-stay discount
  3. Book last-minute on Agoda for same-day deals

Food

Street food is the key — not only cheapest but the most authentic and delicious:

  • Pad Thai (Thailand): 40–80 THB (£0.70–£1.40)
  • Pho (Vietnam): 30,000–50,000 VND (£0.95–£1.60)
  • Nasi Goreng (Indonesia): 15,000–25,000 IDR (£0.70–£1.15)
  • Amok (Cambodia): $3–5
  • Baguette (Laos): 10,000–15,000 LAK (£0.35–£0.50)

Tip

Follow the golden rule: eat where locals eat. If you see a stall with a queue of local people, the food will be fresh, delicious and cheap.

Getting Between Countries

Budget Options

  • Buses: The cheapest way. Bangkok–Chiang Mai 500 THB (£11, 10 hours). Saigon–Phnom Penh $15 (6 hours).
  • Trains: The overnight Bangkok–Chiang Mai train is an experience (sleeper from 700 THB / £15).
  • Budget airlines: AirAsia, VietJet, Lion Air. Flights between capitals from £15–40 if booked early.
  • Boats: In Indonesia and the Philippines, ferries are the only option between islands. From £4–16.

Classic 1-month route: Bangkok (3 days) → Chiang Mai (3 days) → Luang Prabang (3 days) → Hanoi (3 days) → Ha Long Bay (2 days) → Hue/Hoi An (3 days) → Ho Chi Minh (2 days) → Siem Reap (3 days) → Phnom Penh (2 days)

Estimated total budget: £500–750 (excluding international flights)

Essential Tips

Health

  • Drink only bottled or filtered water
